What's in it, page by page

  • Page 1, regular lines: "Dear Santa," at the top, 20 blank lines, and "Love," with a line to sign on.
  • Page 2, wide lines: the same layout with 13 lines, for bigger writing.
  • Page 3, handwriting lines: 6 rows with a top line, a dashed middle line and a baseline, for children still learning how tall letters should be.
  • Page 4, picture page: a large box headed "Here is my picture for you," with 3 lines underneath.
  • Page 5, more to tell you: 24 more lines for a long letter. Print it as many times as you need.
  • Page 6, thank you: the terms of use and credits.

Those line counts are for US Letter. The A4 pages are taller, so they have a few more lines: 22, 14, 7 and 27 on pages 1, 2, 3 and 5.

The letter is blank on purpose. There are no sentence starters and no wish list boxes, so the words are all your child's own.

Who it suits

  • Ages 3 to 4: page 4. Your child draws, and you can write down what they say on the lines.
  • Ages 5 to 6: page 3 or page 2, for a few short sentences. Spelling by sounds is fine.
  • Ages 7 to 10: page 1, and page 5 if they have a lot to say.

These ages are only a guide, so let your child pick the page that looks right to them.

How to use it

  1. Print the page that fits. Print two in case of a change of mind.
  2. Talk first. Ask what your child would like to tell Santa, and about the year as well as the wishes. If they get stuck, these sentence starters and examples can help.
  3. Sign it. A first name is enough.
  4. Decide where it goes. Families do this in different ways: by the fireplace, in a mailbox at home, or next to the cookie plate. Pick what fits your own tradition.

In a classroom, the choice of pages lets children at different levels work on the same activity.

Printing tips

  • US Letter or A4: choose US Letter in the US and Canada, and A4 in most other countries. Both files have the same 6 pages, each sized for that paper.
  • Scale: print at 100% or Actual size, so the lines stay evenly spaced at the size they were drawn.
  • Paper: regular copy paper is fine, and it is easy to fold for an envelope.
  • Color or black and white: both work. The heading and small pictures are the only color on the page.
  • Save paper: print a single page by entering its number in your print dialog.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is free, and there is nothing to sign up for. The buttons on this page go straight to the PDF, with no email or account.

Which page should I print for a 5 year old?

Try page 3 or page 2. Page 3 has handwriting lines with a dashed middle line, and page 2 has wide plain lines. If writing is still hard work, page 4 lets your child draw instead.

Can my child type the letter?

No. The PDF is made to be printed and written on by hand, so there are no fields to type in.

Do you send the letter to Santa?

No. This is only the page. Where it goes is up to you, and many families have their own way of getting it to Santa at home.

Are there prompts or a wish list?

No. The pages are blank apart from "Dear Santa," and "Love," so your child can write anything.
