North Pole Breakfast Ideas: Easy Food, Setup and Timing
A North Pole breakfast is a surprise holiday breakfast that “comes from” the North Pole, usually on December 1 or the morning a visiting elf arrives. Keep it simple: a red or white tablecloth, one or two festive foods, powdered sugar “snow,” a short letter and something small to do. You can set it up in about 20 minutes the night before.
This is one of those traditions that looks elaborate on social media but works perfectly well in a plain version. Here is how I would plan it.
Pick your date
- December 1: a clear start to the season. Pairs nicely with the first day of an advent calendar.
- The morning your Christmas elf arrives: if you have a visiting elf, the breakfast becomes its “welcome.” My elf arrival ideas page has arrival setups.
- Christmas Eve morning: a slower start to a busy day.
- The first Saturday of December: easier for families with early weekday starts.
Choose one and stick to it for a few years. Repetition is what turns something into a tradition.
Easy North Pole breakfast food
Pick two or three. You do not need a whole menu.
- Snowman pancakes: three small pancakes stacked or in a line, with chocolate chips or blueberries for eyes and buttons and a strip of strawberry for a scarf.
- Green or red pancakes or waffles: a few drops of food coloring in the batter.
- “Snow” toast: cinnamon toast with a dusting of powdered sugar through a small sieve.
- Candy cane fruit: banana slices and strawberry slices laid in a curved candy cane shape.
- Reindeer toast: toast with nut or seed butter, pretzel antlers, banana eyes and a raspberry nose. For young toddlers, skip the hard pretzels and use thin apple slices as antlers.
- Green smoothie: banana, spinach and milk or yogurt.
- “Elf” yogurt cups: layers of yogurt, berries and granola in a clear cup.
- Hot cocoa with a candy cane stirrer, at drinking temperature (test it yourself first).
- Mini muffins you baked or bought the day before.
- Popcorn “snowballs” in a bowl for the table, for older kids only.
Choking and allergy notes
For children under 4, cut grapes, berries and cherry tomatoes into small pieces, and avoid whole nuts, popcorn, hard candy and large marshmallows, which the AAP lists as common choking risks. If anyone at the table has a food allergy, plan the menu around them; it is easier than serving two breakfasts.
The 20-minute setup the night before
- Tablecloth: red, white or green, or a white paper tablecloth kids can draw on.
- A “snowy” table: a few cotton balls or a strip of white felt down the middle. No real snow spray near food.
- Decorations from your Christmas box: a small battery tea light, a few ornaments in a bowl, a toy reindeer.
- Place settings: a festive plate or napkin, a small name card for each child.
- A letter from the North Pole: a short note from Santa or the elves, propped against a cup.
- One small activity at each seat: a coloring page and two crayons, a candy cane, or a Christmas bookmark.
- Prep what you can: pancake batter mixed and in the fridge, fruit washed, cocoa mix measured.
In the morning, you only cook, plate and pour.
What to write in the North Pole letter
Keep it to a few lines. For example:
Good morning! The elves heard it is December, so we sent breakfast all the way from the North Pole. The reindeer are practicing their flying, and the workshop is busy. Have a cozy day, and remember: kindness is the best kind of Christmas magic.
Love, the North Pole Elves
If an elf is arriving, the letter can introduce the elf instead. Our Christmas Elf Kit has a fillable arrival letter and 24 short elf notes that work for this. For a letter in Santa’s voice, the free Letter from Santa generator makes a printable page in a couple of minutes.
Little extras (optional)
- Elf footprints: small “footprints” drawn in powdered sugar on the counter, made with a fingertip. Wipe up after breakfast.
- A North Pole “delivery”: pajamas, a book or the advent calendar for the month, set by the table.
- Christmas music playing when they come downstairs.
- Start the countdown: open the first advent door or tear the first paper chain link at breakfast. My advent calendar activity ideas page has a free 2-page sample with the first two activity cards and a countdown poster.
Keeping it realistic
If December 1 falls on a hectic weekday, cereal with green milk and a letter is still a North Pole breakfast. Kids care about the surprise, the colors and being made to feel special. The menu does not have to impress anyone.
For mixed ages
- Toddlers: finger foods, soft fruit cut small, a single board book at their seat.
- Ages 4–7: snowman pancakes and a coloring page.
- Ages 8 and up: let them help set up for younger siblings the night before. Many older kids enjoy being on the “elf team.”
One plate, one letter and a bit of powdered sugar is all it takes to start the season on a happy note.

Frequently asked questions
When is North Pole breakfast?
Many families hold it on December 1 to start the season, or on the morning a visiting Christmas elf arrives. Some do it on Christmas Eve morning instead. Any morning in early December works.
Do I have to make special food?
No. Ordinary breakfast with a little food coloring, powdered sugar ‘snow’ or a festive plate is enough. Kids remember the surprise more than the menu.
How long does setup take?
About 20 minutes the night before if you keep it simple: tablecloth, a few decorations, a letter, and breakfast food you can make quickly in the morning.
