24 Advent Calendar Activity Ideas for Kids (Simple and Screen-Free)

By Adil at TinyMapleCo · Updated October 31, 2026 · Jump to the free sample + printables

An activity advent calendar replaces chocolate with a small family activity for each day from December 1 to 24, such as baking cookies, making paper snowflakes, a cozy movie night or a lights walk. The trick is to mix quick 10-minute ideas for school nights with a few bigger ones for weekends, and to plan the week ahead so nothing needs a last-minute shopping trip.

Inside our printable: Christmas Advent Calendar Activity Cards.

How an activity advent calendar works

  1. Write or print one activity per card.
  2. Put each card in a numbered envelope, bag, box or pocket (1–24).
  3. Each morning, your child opens the day’s card so the activity is something to look forward to.
  4. Do the activity together, then mark the day on a countdown poster or chart.
Plan the week, not the month. Every Sunday, look at the calendar and put the bigger activities (baking, a craft, a trip) on the days you are actually home. Swap the order of cards freely: kids will not mind, and it keeps the calendar fun instead of stressful.

Quick ideas for busy school nights (10–20 minutes)

  1. Write a letter to Santa
  2. Read a holiday story by flashlight under a blanket
  3. Draw a Christmas card for a grandparent or neighbor
  4. Have a 5-minute freeze-dance party to a holiday song
  5. Make paper snowflakes (an adult folds, kids snip)
  6. Color a holiday picture and hang it on the fridge
  7. Write a thank-you note to a teacher, bus driver or helper
  8. Have a hot cocoa “cheers” with marshmallows (a grown-up handles the hot drinks)

Cozy weekend activities (30–60 minutes)

  1. Bake and decorate cookies together
  2. Build a blanket fort and read a winter story inside it
  3. Family movie night with popcorn (for kids over 4; popcorn is a choking risk for younger children)
  4. Build a “gingerbread” house from graham crackers and icing
  5. Family game night: bingo, charades or a simple card game
  6. Decorate the tree together and let your child hang the first ornament
  7. Wrap a present together for someone in the family
  8. Make a paper chain garland

Outdoor and kindness activities

  1. Go on a holiday lights walk or drive and count the houses with lights
  2. Make a simple pinecone bird feeder with a grown-up and hang it outside
  3. Choose a toy you no longer use and donate it
  4. Leave a kind note for a neighbor or the mail carrier
  5. Help make dinner (washing vegetables, setting the table)
  6. Play in the snow or, if there is none, take a “winter nature walk” for pinecones and leaves
  7. Call or video-chat a relative and sing them a song
  8. Christmas Eve: set out treats for Santa and read a bedtime story

Keep it realistic

  • Have back-up cards. Keep a few “easy” cards (read a story, freeze dance) for sick days or late evenings.
  • Use blank cards for your own family traditions, a school concert or a visit from grandparents.
  • Do not aim for perfect. If you miss a day, do two small ones the next day, or simply skip it. A calendar that makes you feel guilty is not doing its job.
  • Use what you have. Most of the ideas above need only paper, crayons, a book or the kitchen.

Advent calendar containers that work

  • 24 small envelopes clipped to a string with clothespins
  • Paper bags with number tags, lined up on a shelf
  • A cardboard egg carton (two cartons give you 24 cups)
  • A paper chain: one link per day, torn off each morning (see our countdown paper chain guide)
Safety note: small paper pieces, number tags and clothespins can be choking hazards for children under 3. Hang the calendar out of reach of toddlers, and let a grown-up do the cutting.

Frequently asked questions

What can I put in an advent calendar instead of chocolate?

Small family activities: bake cookies, make paper snowflakes, read a story by flashlight, do a lights walk, write to Santa, have a movie night or do a kind act. Write one per card and open a card each day.

How do you make an activity advent calendar easy on busy days?

Plan one week at a time, put bigger activities on weekends, keep a few 10-minute back-up cards for busy nights and swap the order of cards whenever you need to.

What age is an activity advent calendar for?

Most activity calendars suit ages 3–8. Younger children enjoy opening the envelope and simple activities, while older kids can read the cards and help plan.

What if we miss a day of the advent calendar?

Skip it or do two small activities the next day. The goal is time together, not a perfect streak.

Is there a free printable advent calendar sample?

Yes. This page offers a free 2-page PDF sample from our Advent Activity Cards: the first two activity cards and a 24-day countdown poster. No sign-up needed.
