Christmas Classroom Party Ideas: A 60-Minute Plan

By Adil at TinyMapleCo ·

A smooth classroom Christmas party for PreK to grade 3 runs about 60 minutes: a 5-minute welcome, four 10-minute stations (a game, a craft, a coloring or puzzle table, and a snack), then one whole-class game and cleanup. Print and prep everything the week before, check allergies with families, and keep each station simple enough to explain in one sentence.

This plan is written for teachers and room parents. If your school uses “winter party,” every station below has a winter version.

Before the party (one week out)

  1. Check school policies: food rules, holiday themes, photos and how many volunteers can come.
  2. Ask about allergies in writing. Plan snacks around the strictest need, or skip food entirely.
  3. Recruit four helpers, one per station. Send each one a half-page with their station instructions.
  4. Print everything (bingo cards, coloring pages, puzzles) and sort it into four labeled folders or bins.
  5. Make a rotation chart: groups by color, stations by number, and an arrow showing the direction of rotation.

The 60-minute plan

Time What happens
0:00–0:05 Welcome, explain the rotation, send groups to their first station
0:05–0:45 Four stations, 10 minutes each (ring a bell to rotate)
0:45–0:55 Whole-class game
0:55–1:00 Cleanup and pack-up of take-home items

Station 1: a table game

Pick one quick game that a volunteer can run with 5–6 kids.

  • Christmas or winter bingo with picture cards for PreK–K and word cards for grades 1–3. Use cereal pieces as markers only if your food policy allows; otherwise use paper squares.
  • Memory match with picture pairs laid face down.
  • Who Am I? cards held to the forehead, with the group giving clues.

My Christmas games for kids guide sorts 15 games by age and group size, and it has a free 2-page sample (an indoor scavenger hunt and a holiday lights walk) you could adapt for the classroom.

Station 2: a simple craft

Choose something that finishes in 8 minutes and dries fast.

  • Paper snowflakes for grades 1–3; pre-folded paper for younger kids.
  • Paper plate snowman with cotton balls and pre-cut hats.
  • Handprint reindeer on cardstock (stamp pads instead of paint keep it cleaner).
  • Paper chain: each child decorates two strips, then they join the class chain.

Put names on the back before starting. Wet crafts go on a drying tray by the window.

Station 3: coloring, puzzles or worksheets

This is the calm station, and every party needs one.

  • Coloring pages with bold lines for PreK–K, more detailed ones for older kids.
  • Mazes, dot-to-dots and word searches for grades 1–3.
  • A themed worksheet if your class is mid-unit, for example counting snowmen or tracing winter words.

Our 50 Christmas Coloring Pages set has bold, easy lines suited to ages 3–8, and the license covers a single classroom. For a learning page, the Christmas Worksheets PreK + K are clearly marked by level. My kindergarten Christmas worksheets guide explains which skills fit December, with a free 3-page sample.

Station 4: snack

  • Build-a-snowman: banana slices and a raisin face for older kids; skip raisins for any child who could choke on them.
  • Fruit “candy canes”: banana and strawberry slices on a plate.
  • Cocoa: warm, not hot, in small cups.
  • Non-food alternative: a “treat bag” of stickers, a pencil and an eraser.

Label each snack with its ingredients, wash hands before eating, and keep any food that a child is allergic to completely off their table.

Whole-class game (10 minutes)

  • Freeze dance with holiday or winter music.
  • Snowball toss: crumpled white paper balls thrown into a bucket from a tape line.
  • Pass the present: a wrapped box with a small prize inside, passed while the music plays; the child holding it answers a question before passing again. Make sure everyone gets a turn.
  • Charades with simple actions: build a snowman, ice skate, wrap a present.

Prep checklist

  • Rotation chart and a bell or chime
  • Four labeled bins with station materials
  • Printed pages (plus 3–4 extras per station)
  • Crayons, glue sticks, child-safe scissors
  • Wipes, paper towels, trash bags
  • Name labels and a take-home bag per child
  • Allergy list kept by the teacher

Tips that save the day

  • Explain each station once, before rotating. One sentence each.
  • Have an early-finisher option at every station: a coloring page or a word search.
  • Keep sugar low before the last activity. Put the snack station in the second or third rotation, not last.
  • Plan for noise. A chime and “hands on heads” signal helps more than raising your voice.
  • Send home the craft, not the mess: keep glitter out of the room entirely. It is also hard on the school cleaners.

Printing for 25 kids

Print bingo boards and game cards on cardstock so they can be reused next year. Coloring pages and worksheets are fine on regular paper. My printing guide covers paper weight and Actual size settings.

After the party

Send home a short note or a photo of the class chain or craft display, if your school allows photos. Thank your volunteers by name. Keep the printed bingo cards, the rotation chart and a list of what worked in a labeled folder; next year’s party will take half the time to plan.

A clear plan, four stations and one great closing game make a party that teachers, helpers and kids all enjoy.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a classroom Christmas party be?

45–60 minutes is right for PreK to grade 3. Longer parties tend to fall apart after the snack.

How do you run a party with 20–25 kids?

Use 4 stations with 5–6 kids each, rotate every 10 minutes, and have one adult at each station if possible. End with one whole-class game.

What about kids who do not celebrate Christmas?

Many schools call it a winter or holiday party. Snowmen, penguins, snowflakes, cocoa and winter animals work for everyone. Check your school’s policy.

How do I handle food allergies?

Follow your school’s food policy, ask families about allergies in advance, label everything, and consider non-food fun such as stickers or a craft instead of treats.
